On our first trip to WDW with my daughter, she was only 15 months old, and she had very little hair. Even now at 2, she still doesn't have all that much, but that didn't stop me from booking her for what should be a must-do for all those little ones traveling to WDW: their first haircut at the Harmony Barber Shop on Main Street, U. S. A. in the Magic Kingdom.
The first haircut package is very affordable ($18 +tip on our visit in June 2012). You can book an appointment by calling 407-WDW-PLAY. The shop itself conjures that nostalgia of an earlier time, with its peppermint swirl barber pole and charming interior reminiscent of bygone days. On our way out, we even caught a special performance of the Dapper Dans barbershop quartet.
With the “My First Haircut package,” your child will get lots of Mickey stickers, a special Mickey ear hat embroidered with the words “My First Haircut” as a keepsake, and some pixie dust (glitter that they sprinkle in your child’s hair); you'll get a special pouch with those precious curls to save and a certificate commemorating your child’s first haircut for his or her baby book or scrapbook.

The stylists at the Harmony Barber Shop are really amazing at working with young children, although adults and even older children can book haircuts there, too. For the little ones, they have special booster seats for the barber chairs and lots of distractions. My daughter’s stylist put Mickey stickers on her shirt and shoes and let her play with a light-up Minnie toy to keep her occupied. My niece’s stylist had a toy that blew bubbles, and since she was a little older, at age 3, and had a little more hair, she got to wear a special Mickey cape during her haircut. The folks here work hard to spread the magic and keep the tears at bay.
The only drawback, if there really is one, is that the space in the barbershop itself is really limited. I had booked my niece and daughter for overlapping appointments, and it was hard for the parents, grandparents, and siblings to all get a glimpse of the momentous occasion. There is a bench outside the shop with seating and limited viewing through the window, but we found it best to trade off and take turns inside the shop.
Ultimately, the first haircut package worked really nicely for my daughter and my youngest niece, especially since we had gifted my older niece with a princess makeover at the Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique. While you have to be at least 3 to do the Bibbidi Bobbidi or Pirate's League, the first haircut gives the little ones a little something special at a price that’s very affordable.
